18 an hour 4 days ago 4 days ago 4 days ago The Warrick County Coroner's Office is currently seeking motivated applicants to fill 2 available Deputy Coroner positions, which are categorized as a Special Occupation.
DUTIES:
Responds to calls from Dispatch for deceased persons inside County jurisdiction.
Investigates death to determine cause and manner, determines if autopsy and toxicology needs to be done and makes arranges with Pathologist, and works with law enforcement and other investigative agencies during determination process.
Notifies next of kin of death and determines disposition of body, including transferring body to morgue or releasing body from the scene.
Communicates with morgue or funeral home to coordinate care of body.
Maintains various records for cases, including compiling case files, writing reports to reflect investigation and findings, and providing detailed/accurate records as needed.
Finalizes death investigation with follow up and gives report to family.
Maintains property of Coroner's Office, including cleaning and restocking supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
I.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or GED and ability to obtain and maintain Medical Death Investigation certification.
Must be 21 years of age.
Thorough knowledge of, and ability to make practical application of, customary practices, procedures, rules, and regulations of Warrick County Coroner's Office.
Practical knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, codes, ordinances, and procedures and ability to apply evidence collection/preservation techniques, conduct through investigations, and assist law enforcement with case preparation.
Practical knowledge of basic medical terminology and concepts related to identifying cause of death.
Practical knowledge of local geography.
Working knowledge of universal health precautions and blood borne pathogens control and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.
Working knowledge of community geography.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare/complete all required reports within department deadlines.
Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, and personal conduct.
Ability to properly operate standard office and medical examination equipment, including computer, calculator, camera, radio, drug/narcotic identification kit, toxicology kit, fingerprint equipment, and vehicle.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, local and state police, witnesses, families of deceased, news media, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, and take authoritative action applying appropriate discretion and common sense.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile individuals.
Ability to count, compute, and perform arithmetic operations, compare/compile/classify data, analyze/observe data, and take action based on data analysis.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self and others.
Ability to properly operate and maintain all assigned vehicles, equipment, and uniforms.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.
Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations and plan/layout assigned work projects.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to testify in legal proceedings/court.
Ability to occasionally work extended/irregular hours, weekends, and evenings, travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight, respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis, and serve on call on rotation basis.
Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
II.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent's work priorities and schedules are primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public.
Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives.
Decisions are regularly made in the absence of policy, and incumbent is subject only to guidance from Coroner.
Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented by legally defined procedures and/or notification from other departments.
Undetected errors could result in endangerment of self or others, work delays in other departments/agencies and/or inconvenience to other agencies or public.
III.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, various law enforcement agencies, hospital, hospice, and funeral home personnel, and the public for the purpose of giving and receiving factual information.
Incumbent reports directly to Coroner.
IV.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties at various indoor and outdoor locations, vehicle, laboratory, hospital, and/or standard office environment, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking/sitting for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds, driving, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, handling/grasping/fingering objects, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, responding to emergencies from off-duty status, and responding to situations involving potential harm to self and others.
Incumbent regularly works in a noisy environment, in confined areas, in high places, and may be exposed to violent/irate individuals.
Incumbent is regularly subject to weather extremes, disturbing evidence, infectious and contagious diseases, noxious fumes, hazardous chemicals/materials, and emotionally distraught persons.
Safety precautions, including the use of protective clothing and equipment, must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
Incumbent occasionally works extended/irregular hours, weekends, and evenings, travels out of town for training, sometimes overnight, responds to emergencies on 24-hour basis, and serves on call on rotation basis.
These are part-time positions with a starting hourly wage of up to $11.
18 per hour.
The positions also have an on-call rotation of 24 hour periods and flexible shifts during the month.
